Locomotives & Rolling Stock

Resident Stock | Visiting Stock

The Acton Miniature Railway operates with a variety of rolling stock, mostly based on prototypes that operate (or used to operate) in the London area.

Sarah Siddons (No. 12)

Donated to the museum in 2005, Sarah Siddons is a battery-electric model of a Metropolitan-Vickers electric locomotives as used on the Metropolitan railway between 1922 and 1961.
The prototype loco is preserved in working order and occasionally hauls special trains.
The model was built to 7½in gauge (as opposed to the AMR's 7¼in) and required re-gauging and a full service before it could be put to use. It made its debut at the March 2008 open weekend top-and-tailing trains with the 'A'-class.

Metropolitan Coaches

Built by Aristocraft, these two bogie coaches arrived at the AMR in February 2007.
They are finished in Metropolitan Railway livery to match the 'Metro-Vick' locos and are equipped with vacuum braking.

Riding Truck

Built by Mike Dickinson in 2008, this riding truck will run with Sarah Siddons. It is fitted with a brake lever to stop a moving train, and a screw-down brake for parking. There is also the option of retrofitting vacuum brakes.
The photo shows it in an unpainted state, immediately after delivery.

Wagons

Two wagons were donated to the AMR with Sarah Siddons - a 4-wheel LNWR open wagon (used as a driving truck) and a bogie open wagon (which doubles as a passenger coach).
Both wagons were also built to 7½ gauge but have since been regauged.
Neither are used on regular services as their couplings are incompatible with most visiting stock.

Little Red Train

Based on 1938 Tube Stock, the Little Red Train (LRT) is a regular visitor to the AMR.
The train currently operates as a 2-car set, but a third car is currently under overhaul.
When not operating at the AMR, the train visits other miniature railways and operates on a portable track at fetes and other events.
For more information on the LRT, or to book it for your own event, please visit www.littleredtrain.co.uk.

Michael Faraday (No. 18)

Like Sarah Siddons, Michael Faraday is a battery electric Metrovick Locomotive.
The loco has made several visits to the AMR.

Class 60

Based on a Brush class 60 Co-Co diesel locomotive, this battery-electric model visited the AMR in February 2005.

Frederick is an 0-4-0ST and was the first steam locomotive to operate at the AMR, in March 2006.

Metropolitan Railway 'A' Class

Built for the Metropolitan Railway by Beyer Peacock from 1864, the 4-4-0T 'A' Class locos were fitted with condensing equipment to allow them to work in the railway's tunnel sections.
One of the 'A' class locomotives is preserved at the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden.
The model first visited in a partially completed state in March 2006 and (after completion) returned to provide rides at subsequent open weekends.
4-Wheel Diesel

4-wheel Diesel

This battery electric loco is based on a narrow-gauge outline diesel shunter and regularly visits the AMR.
Its braking system is not yet up to the standard required for passenger service so only works empty stock and test trains.

Livvy the Tram Engine

Livvy is based on a Wisbech and Upwell J70 tram locomotive, though battery-electric powerered rather than steam.
She first visited the AMR during a work session in January 2007 and, although she does not have the power to haul passenger trains up the AMR's gradients, she has seen use on test and works trains as well as providing banking assistance to passenger trains.
For more information about Livvy, see her website.
